I’m Brian Faust.

Hello! I’m Brian, a self-taught senior software engineer focused on developer experience and tooling. I build open-source packages and practical systems that remove friction from everyday engineering work.

Over the past two decades, I’ve worked as a freelance engineer, independent contributor, and consultant for teams around the world. My work often begins where a product, platform, or engineering organization has become difficult to change. I help clarify the technical direction, renew the foundations, and leave teams with systems they can confidently own.

My decisions are deliberately pragmatic. The right solution is the one that fits the people, constraints, and problem—not simply the newest tool. That usually means making complexity visible, choosing durable boundaries, and optimizing for the developers who will live with the result.

Hands-on curiosity has taken me through APIs, databases, web and desktop applications, mobile software, command-line tools, browser extensions, distributed systems, scraping, low-level programming, and blockchain. Moving between those areas has taught me to recognize the ideas that transfer and the details that do not.

I learn best by building, testing assumptions against real use, and explaining what I find. Tutorials and talks still have their place, but practical work is where knowledge becomes judgment. That balance keeps me adaptable and makes the craft of software engineering continually interesting.
